Mary MacKillop Catholic College students were overjoyed at this morning’s Wellcamp Airport Breakfast with the Stars when their school was announced as the winner of the Weetwood School Colour Competition.
Mary McKillop Catholic College years four, five and six classes worked cohesively to produce an art piece encompassing all elements of racing, including an overwhelming link to this year’s Weetwood.
The Young Brumby’s mascot, ‘Bernie the Brumby’, aptly named after the mighty racehorse ‘Bernborough’, featured as the centrepiece on the canvas.
Using papier mache, ‘Bernie the Brumby’ came alive in a three dimensional form and adorned the colours of orange and purple to celebrate ‘Bernborough’, the mighty racehorse.
Students also included 15 images and articles in memory of Bernborough, symbolic of the great stallion’s 15 consecutive wins.
The students replicated the Weetwood sponsors in the fencing, including the event’s major sponsor, Audi Centre Toowoomba.
A total score of 85 out of a possible 100 was awarded to Mary MacKillop Catholic College by the panel of five judges.
Mary MacKillop Catholic College was awarded a cash prize of $500 and a Samsung Galaxy tablet, donated by Harvey Norman Computers and Electrical for their winning efforts.
The two runners up schools; Harristown State School and Gabbinbar State School, both received $250 cash prize and a digital camera donated by Harvey Norman Computers and Electrical each for their magnificent artwork efforts.
Fourteen schools across the Toowoomba region participated in the Weetwood in the Community initiative and Toowoomba Turf Club (TTC) Chief Executive Officer Blair Odgers was overwhelmed by the response.
“This year’s canvas entries raised the bar on the exceptional canvases that were presented at last year’s inaugural competition,” Odgers said.
“The Weetwood event has a long association with the local community and we are delighted with the continued support.
“Weetwood week events continue tomorrow with the Audi Centre Toowoomba Weetwood Barrier Draw, the Weetwood Racing Mass tomorrow night followed by the Weetwood Calcutta on Friday night.
“Tickets are still available for Saturday’s Audi Centre Toowoomba Weetwood – online or at the gate,” Odgers said.
